ZOO Antwerpen–Signage & wayfinding boards
ZOO Antwerpen is part of the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp (KMDA). Established on July 21, 1843, it is one of the world’s oldest zoos. The KMDA manages both ZOO Antwerpen and Planckendael, and it is committed to education and wildlife conservation. They aimed to modernize signage throughout the park and update message boards at animal exhibits, with a focus on sustainability and functionality.
The project for ZOO Antwerpen required new signage that was not only visually appealing but also "vandal-proof" This meant the signs needed to be robust enough to last at least five years without damage from park visitors. Additionally, the signs needed to be easy to install, order, and maintain, and flexible enough for on-site adjustments by the zoo's technical team.
The result was a comprehensive new signage system throughout the zoo, from animal exhibits to directional guides. The signs and poles were carefully placed following surveys of various locations within the zoo. Additionally, the specific ground type played a significant role in how poles were secured. After a final walkthrough with a zoo staff member, the entire project received approval, and installation commenced. We completed the project before Easter, in time for the zoo’s new season. Even now, more than 15 years later, the signage remains in use, a testament to its durability and thoughtful design.
